Lakefront
2010/2011 Shoreline Restoration and Lakefront Committee Updates:

Existing Shoreline Restoration Project Completion:
  • The previous 600 foot "Ajax" shoreline restoration area was finally completed in 2010.  update: Our project team, Cass Kordecki, Gene
Decker (Project manager), Trish Fahey, and Allen Searles worked with Walworth County LURM: Fay Amerson and WI DNR, Pam Schense and
Creative Edge to Remedy the problems and complete the ongoing restoration site project.  Geneva Township corrected the drainage issues along
Lakeshore Drive.   The "Ajax" were supplemented with Rocks, ie "Rip Rap" and large tree stumps anchored at an angle to the shoreline were installed
to deflect severe ice push which was lifting the Ajax and unfrozen bank.  Additionally, the LCBPOA BOD voted not to supplement with additional
planned vegetation at this time but rather to let the native vegetation fill in which saved several thousand dollars.  This winter we see the results of
those efforts: Success!!!  See the pictures attached.  Note the major Ice Deflection by the logs and Rocks rather than lifting the AJAX and unfrozen
soil and Vegetation and causing erosion:  Click on the smaller pictures to enlarge:

Tree Trimming Work along Lakefront Completed 2010/2011:
Long overdue trimming of dead limbs and top-heavy trees all along the lakefront was completed in fall of 2010 and winter of 2011. Special thank you
to Gene Decker for his Voluntary Project Manager role of helping to obtain the necessary Walworth County Shoreland Zoning Exemption Permit, and
coordinating paid and volunteer workers to trim and remove limbs and debris.  This initiative saved the membership several thousand dollars.   Thank
you to the Volunteers and Workers: Gene Decker, Alan Searles, Gary Cocroft, Cass Kordecki, Pat Bromeland, Mike Bowman, Ryan Nicewarner, Mike

New Playground Equipment and Picnic Tables for Cramer Park and Lakefront areas:
Thank you to Gene Decker for donation of Playground equipment on our lakefront area near Iris Road Last Summer.  He and several volunteers including Alan Searles and
Pat Bromeland, have been constructing new playground equipment and picnic tables  for Cramer Park and Lakefront Areas that will be in place this summer.

Long term Master Plan for Lakefront Restoration:
  • We Continue to Develop a long-term master plan for future lake shore restoration prioritizing work on the next most critical areas:  Due to concerns
with budget issues, including uncertainty of costs of Clubhouse Repair, future lakefront restoration projects have been temporarily put on hold. Here is
the link to the Shoreline Erosion Potential Study: shoreline study.Update: Next Potential area of restoration Whittier and Lakeshore Drive.

Initiatives of Long Term Lakefront Erosion Control:
  • "Adopt a Shoreline" program, where homeowners and generous individuals or groups can participate in sponsoring and/or participating in future
shoreline restoration efforts and be recognized for their contributions and efforts
  • Evaluate feasibility of establishing a combination of hard armouring and native shoreline buffers to
  1. protect our shoreline from further erosion,
  2. buffer watershed run-off into our lake,
  3. help deter geese from nesting, loitering and soiling our lake front common areas.
  4. improve aesthetic appearance of our lake front.

Mary King and Trish Fahey from the Town of Geneva, Lake Committee traveled to Lauderdale Lakes to evaluate their recent shoreline buffer
project.  See Mary's presentation here:Example lake front Buffers

Goose Damage Abatement

Unfortunately the tender short grass of our beautifully maintained green lawn along our lake front common area is an irresistible food source for the Canadian Geese
that we know are increasing in numbers and leaving behind large amount of feces on our beaches and lawn.
On average we spend about $5000 annually on
Goose Damage Abatement Measures
. After extensive research concerning humane, legal, and cost-effective abatement options, In addition to the abatement
measures that were implemented last year, We are looking at additional options in our attempt to reduce goose damage on our beaches and lake front areas this year
including:

  • Labor was hired to clean the beaches every morning.   We will continue to implement this measure in 2011.

  • Continued Modifications to our landscaping plans

  1. We will only cut the grass every other week, allowing grass to grow a little taller.  We did this the last 2 years. This year however we will cut the grass  more
frequently when it is wet, and prior to holiday weekends.
  2. There will again be an increased area of un-mowed vegetation to grow along lake front, creating a cost-effective native shoreline buffer area and only
trimming access to piers.  The geese feel less secure if they cannot see clearly or have an unobstructed flight path to their area of safety, the water.

  • Consistent dog and human harassment is allowed  as long as geese aren't chased away from their nests or harmed in the process.  If you walk along our lake
front regularly, and/or walk your dog their regularly and would like to participate, please let us know. If we coordinate these walkers at recurring times regularly to
harass the geese residing on our desirable areas, hopefully they will be discouraged from returning.    Please contact Cass if you would like to contribute here.
Please note the obvious concern for safety to our residents of dogs on our beach and common areas, unleashed dogs are not allowed on the lakefront areas. .

  • Strings of removable flags have been strung between temporary posts on our beaches which need to be opened/removed in the morning and replaced in the
evening.  We will continue this measure in 2011.  Please note: The Walworth County Shoreland Zoning ordinance prevents permanent barriers to impede wildlife
movement in the shoreland zoning area.  The geese unfortunately learned to walk under and around our temporary barriers quite frequently.

  • In 2009 we considered spraying the grass on various lake front areas with deterrents that would make the grass unpalatable to the geese.  We had a generous
homeowner that purchased and donated a supply for us.  The board voted against utilizing this measure due to environmental concerns associated with the
product "Flight-Control"  and the increased cost associated with purchasing a grape extract product and hiring labor to apply it several times a month, and after
rainfall.   We could re-visit this issue.

  • Population Control: working collaboratively with the Town of Geneva Lake Committee obtained permits to oil the eggs,  to control the population with DNR
approved humane measures to blunt the population growth.

Volunteers & Donors Needed!!!!
Adopt a Lakefront
We own 2 miles of shoreline, much of which has  been eroding rapidly due to ice push
and wave action and lack of erosion control measures. Our mature trees are
compromised as well.  Planting Native shoreline Buffers are a great way to protect our
shoreline!!! We are looking for sponsors of these efforts, including volunteers for
planning, implementation, fund-raising, monetary donations. If there is a portion of the
shoreline, trees, etc that you would like to see modified, contact us to get it done!!!  See
educational links to Shoreline buffer education below for more information. Contact Cass

"Clean Boats, Clean Waters, Campaign"
Work collaboratively with the Town Lake Committee to monitor the boat launch during
busy times this summer to pass out literature and educate visitors about protecting our
lake against invasive species. You must participate in a brief training session to
participate, a future date for training will be announced: See Link  for information waters

Geese Harrassment: Dog and People Walkers:
We need a volunteer coordinator for this one.  If you would like 'be interested in
coordinating the volunteers and setting up scheduled times for walkers and dog walkers....
or you would like to participate in scheduled times for you to walk and "SHOO" or to walk
your dogs along our lakefront area, to discourage geese from loitering on our common
areas, without allowing any harm to geese, as per DNR rules: contact Cass.
